Kaakau Hernandez formed in Rio de Janeiro in the late 1990s, with founding members including vocalist Fred Nascimento, guitarist Victor Pereira, and bassist Caio Barreto. Their sound pulled from samba, funk, and soul, and they released their self-titled debut album around that time.
One of their best-known songs is "Do Jeito Que Você É," which appeared on an album of the same name. They also recorded "Passos Escuros" and "Porta Aberta." Their lyrics often dealt with social issues, and in 2002 a song called "Fala Brasil" sparked some public debate about race and inequality.
They put out another album called "De Alma Lavada" after that. The group's music found an audience in Brazil, where some of their songs became associated with themes of self-acceptance and social awareness.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
