Editor's note

Kaikan Phrase's brief, bright Japanese pop moment

A late-90s band that left a handful of sharp singles before disbanding in 2003.

For their vibe, try 'C No Binetsu' first. 'Tokyo Gensou' is the one that feels most like their signature.

They arrived fully formed with their debut single 'C No Binetsu' in 1997, a track that still pops up in fan playlists. Songs like 'Tokyo Gensou' and 'Midnight Crow' have that specific, slightly melancholic energy that defined a certain corner of Japanese pop at the turn of the century. They weren't around long, but their sound was distinct enough to stick.

The band formed and released their debut single and self-titled album within a year. They put out a second album called 'Eien' in 2001 and were done by 2003.
