Kajto formed in 1999 with Ermir Kapaj on vocals and guitar, Andi Vokopola on guitar, Gjergj Leka on bass, and Drilon Vejseli on drums. Their name means "The Birds," which also became the title of their debut album in 2001. That record's title track, "Al Birdoj," turned into something of an anthem.
Their music often touched on social issues, which sometimes drew criticism from more conservative corners of Albanian society. They kept at it through five studio albums, including "Vetja ime" in 2003 and "Një ditë e re" in 2010. Songs like "Dancanta Ĉevalo" and "Knabo kaj kajto" show their range from driving rock to more reflective moments.
For a while there, you couldn't go far in Albania without hearing Kajto on the radio or at a gathering. The lineup stayed steady, and their shows in places like Tirana drew crowds that knew all the words.
