Archive material and source history
Kamalião formed in Salvador, Bahia in the early 1990s around vocalist Luiz Caldas and guitarist Carlinhos Brown. Their debut album came out in 1994, followed by records like 'Jaguar' in 1998 and 'Transe Vivo' in 2001. They worked with percussionist Dadi Carvalho, bassist Jorge Zarath, and vocalist Margareth Menezes at different points, and collaborated with artists including Caetano Veloso, Gilberto Gil, and Marisa Monte.
Their song 'Contos de Carnaval' became particularly well-known, alongside tracks like 'Crônica do Amor Blues' and 'Estátua de Argila'. In the early 2000s, the band faced accusations of plagiarizing traditional Yoruba music, though these were never proven.
