Kamalleão formed in Lisbon in the late 1980s, coming out of the city's post-punk and new wave circles. The band's lineup included Pedro Puppe on vocals and guitar, Francisco Ribeiro on bass, Rui Costa on drums, and Fernanda Keil handling keyboards and vocals. Their early sound drew from acts like Talking Heads and David Bowie, along with Brazilian Tropicalia, which gave them a foundation for the genre-blending they'd become known for.
They released their first album 'Entre Nós' in 1989, followed by 'A Sombra' in 1991. The 1994 album 'Natal' featured the Christmas song of the same name, which became a holiday staple in Portugal. Another track, 'Ritual,' also appears among their most recognized songs. Their 1996 double album 'O Livro' incorporated world music and psychedelic elements, and they later put out 'Sinfonia de Lisboa' in 2000.
Their lyrics often touched on identity and social themes. In 2016, they released a retrospective box set called 'A História' that looked back on their work up to that point.
