Kamau e Instituto formed in Niterói, Brazil in the early 2000s as a collective led by vocalist and guitarist Kamau. The original lineup included Marcello Scopelliti on guitar, Josimar de Lima on bass, Alexandre Maia on drums, and Juliano "Rasta" Costa on percussion. Their first self-titled album came out in 2002, followed by "Terra" in 2004 and "Um Só Lugar" in 2006.
Their 2008 album "Amar É" brought them wider recognition, with the title track becoming a significant hit. That album won the Prêmio da Música Brasileira for Best Reggae Album. They've continued releasing music since, including "Pra Onde Vai Coração" in 2010, "Só Pra Dizer" in 2012, and "Não Se Apague" in 2015.
Songs like "Época de épicos," "Equilíbrio," and "Poesia De Concreto" show their blend of reggae, soul, and Brazilian rhythms. The group has seen lineup changes over time, with different musicians joining and departing from the collective.
