Kamnouze formed in Algiers in the early 1980s, blending rai, rock, and traditional Algerian rhythms. Their music carried messages of social justice and dissent, which put them at odds with the authorities of the time. They faced arrests and censorship but kept playing.
Their 1985 debut album was titled after the song "Le combat continue," which became an anthem of defiance. Other tracks like "73 Touches" and "Apache" show their range. The band's core included vocalist Hocine Hallaf, guitarist Abdelkader Chaou, and bassist Rachid Taha, who later went solo.
They released several albums over the following decades, including "Le sang des opprimés" in 1990 and "Djazaïr" in 2006. Their live shows were known for raw energy. While their music resonated internationally, it remained rooted in the specific tensions of their place and time.
