Kanales formed in Monterrey in the early 1990s with Lupe Tijerina on vocals and bass, Juan Salazar on accordion, Oscar Naranjo on drums, and Ramiro Puente on guitar. They built a local following with corridos and ballads that had a raw, direct quality.
Their song 'Corrido de Don Sol' became their most recognizable track, telling the story of a father in a way that connected with listeners. They also recorded 'El Color De La Suerte' and 'Del Monte Soy' during this period.
In 1994, the band was briefly detained by Mexican authorities in connection with a scandal, though they were released without charges. They continued recording through the late 1990s, putting out albums like 'Corridos de Sangre' and 'Historias de Barrio' before their final release in 2001.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
