Editor's note

Kara's Flowers, the band before Maroon 5

The short-lived Los Angeles quartet that became something else entirely.

For the clearest picture, listen to 'Simple Kind Of Lovely' and 'Everyday People'. That's the sound they were building before the reset.

You can hear the early version of a sound that would later define pop radio. Songs like 'Simple Kind Of Lovely' and 'Everyday People' are the blueprint, full of the melodic hooks and clean production that would eventually become a signature. It's the starting point for one of the biggest bands of the 2000s.

They formed in Los Angeles in the mid-1990s, releasing an EP and the album 'The Fourth World' in 1997 and 1998. After that album didn't connect, the band called it quits in 1999. A few years later, most of the members regrouped with a new guitarist and became Maroon 5.

Kara's Flowers formed in Los Angeles in the mid-1990s with Adam Levine, Jesse Carmichael, Michael Madden, and Ryan Dusick. They released a self-titled EP in 1997 and their debut album 'The Fourth World' the following year. Songs like 'Everyday People' and 'Simple Kind Of Lovely' came from this period.

The band's run was brief. After 'The Fourth World' failed to find much of an audience, Kara's Flowers disbanded in 1999. A couple of years later, Levine, Carmichael, Madden, and Dusick regrouped with James Valentine and became Maroon 5.
