Karel Kryl

Karel Kryl was born in 1944 in Kroměříž, Czechoslovakia. He studied piano, accordion, and guitar as a young man, and his early influences included folk and chanson music. As a teenager, he formed a band called Rebels and began writing songs that connected with Czech youth in the 1960s.

By the late 1960s, Kryl had become a significant voice during the Prague Spring movement. His song 'Alibi V a Moll' was written as a response to the Soviet invasion of 1968.

He released several albums while in exile, including 'Bratříčku, Zavírej Vrátka' in 1969, 'Maškary' in 1974, and 'Karavana Mraků' in 1978. Other songs like 'Anděl' and 'Babylon' became part of his repertoire. Kryl sometimes collaborated with other Czech musicians including Vladimír Merta and Jaroslav Hutka.

Kryl died in 1994 at age 49. His music remains part of Czech cultural memory, particularly songs that spoke to the political realities of his time.
