Karelia formed in Tampere, Finland in 2005 with vocalist Tomi Joutsen, guitarists Jani Loikas and Antti Myllykoski, bassist Lauri Tuohimaa, and drummer Marko Hildén. Their debut album 'Via Dolorosa' came out in 2007, followed by 'Unbreakable' in 2010 and 'The Curse of Evermore' in 2014. They released a fourth album called 'Black' in 2019.
Their songs like 'Blind,' 'Breakdown,' and 'Crash' fit into a progressive metal style that sometimes gets described as having both melancholic and uplifting elements. The band has worked with themes that include classical and folk touches, though they've also faced some criticism for lyrical content exploring darker subjects.
In 2015, Tomi Joutsen dealt with a vocal cord injury that required surgery and recovery time. The band kept working after that, putting out 'Black' a few years later. They're still based in Finland.
