Karnea formed in 2007 when Rúnar Hansen and Halldór Orri Pálsson came together after their previous band Kaldera ended. They were joined by drummer Elías Már Ólafsson. Their debut album 'Acerbero' came out in 2010, with the title track establishing their atmospheric approach to heavy music.
Pálsson left the band in 2013, and Ólafur Björn Þórhallsson took over on bass. The group has released several albums including 'Discipula' in 2014, 'Harbinger' in 2018, and 'Ashen' in 2022. Songs like 'Autodafe' and 'Giù Da Me' show their range within a dark, textured metal sound.
Karnea's lineup has remained stable with Hansen on vocals and guitar, Þórhallsson on bass, and Ólafsson on drums. Their music tends to explore heavier themes without much fanfare about it.
