Katarsis Tenebris formed in the Norwegian black metal scene in the late 1990s. Guitarist and vocalist Bård "Faust" Eithun joined in 2001, bringing a reputation from his time with Mayhem. The band's early live shows were known for confrontational elements like animal sacrifices and self-mutilation, which led to festival bans in some places.
Their debut album "Blood on Ice" established their raw sound, followed by releases like "Ordeal" and "666" that experimented with dense atmospheres. The 2006 track "Death By Hope" became their most recognized song, drawing both acclaim and criticism for its nihilistic themes. Some accused the band of glorifying suicide, particularly focusing on Eithun's worldview.
The current lineup includes Eithun on guitar and vocals, Asgeir Mickelson on drums, and Anders Gyldenøhr on bass. They've continued releasing albums and touring, though their live performances have become more understated compared to earlier years. Other songs in their catalog include "Estigmas Da Carne" and "Twilight Of Mysticism."
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
