Editor's note

Katia Guerreiro sings fado with a poet's touch

A Portuguese singer who carries the fado tradition forward while speaking her mind.

For a sense of her range, try 'Fado Pessoa' for the traditional side, then 'Fora de Cena' for something a little different.

Guerreiro's voice gives fado a contemporary presence without losing its essential ache. Songs like 'De Ti Direi Apenas' show how she works with poetry, setting words by António Gedeão to music. She's also been willing to step outside the music, publicly questioning arts funding and speaking on social issues.

She started in local choirs and fado gatherings before her 1995 debut 'Fado Maior'. Later albums like 'Asas' in 2003 and 'Fados de Amor e Saudade' in 2006 built her catalog, with collaborations ranging from Mísia to Caetano Veloso.

Katia Guerreiro is a Portuguese singer who works primarily with fado and folk music. She was born in Setúbal and started singing in local choirs and fado gatherings before releasing her debut album 'Fado Maior' in 1995. Her band has included José Manuel Neto on Portuguese guitar, Marino de Freitas on viola, and Luís Guerreiro on bass guitar.

Her 2003 album 'Asas' featured lyrics by the poet António Gedeão. Songs like 'De Ti Direi Apenas' and 'Fado Dos Contrários' show her approach to the fado tradition. She has collaborated with other Portuguese musicians including Mísia and António Zambujo, and with Brazilian singer Caetano Veloso.

In 2012 she was involved in a public dispute with the Portuguese government over arts funding. She has also drawn criticism for speaking out on social and political matters. Her later albums include 'Fados de Amor e Saudade' from 2006 and 'Os Fados do Fado' from 2010.
