Katla is an Icelandic post-rock band from Reykjavík. The group formed around vocalist and songwriter Einar Arnar Ásgeirsson, with Guðmundur Vignir Karlsson on bass and guitar, Sigurður Bjarnason on drums, and Snorri Hallgrímsson on guitar and vocals.
Their 2008 album 'Kaldidalur' drew attention for its criticism of the Icelandic government's handling of the financial crisis that year. The album's lead single 'Hringrás' became associated with anti-establishment protests, though the band faced accusations of being unpatriotic.
Musically, Katla works with a post-rock foundation that incorporates ambient, shoegaze, and folk elements. Their songs often feature intricate guitar work and sparse, atmospheric soundscapes alongside lyrics that touch on social and political themes.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
