Kato Tokiko

Kato Tokiko was born in 1943 in Hokkaido, where she grew up with the traditional music of the Ainu people. By the 1960s she was performing at local festivals and small venues, writing songs that would eventually include 'Shiretoko Ryojo' and 'Kaze Uta'.

In 1972, 'Shiretoko Ryojo' became a national sensation in Japan. The song depicted the Shiretoko Peninsula and resonated with listeners, though Kato's music often carried political messages about Ainu rights and environmental concerns that drew both criticism and admiration.

She released several albums that blended folk, pop, and traditional Ainu music. She worked with musicians like Yosuke Yamashita and Julian Lloyd Webber, but faced personal challenges with mental health and substance abuse that affected her career. In later years she withdrew from music.
