She started singing professionally in 1971 and hit a turning point in 1985 with the film Saagar, where her version of Main Vari Vari became widely known. Her recordings include songs like Jaanaejaana O Jaanejaana, and she worked with composers from R.D. Burman to A.R. Rahman. Awards like the Filmfare in 1995 and the Padma Shri in 2005 mark her place in Indian music.
She came from a musical family and had been performing locally before 1971. After Saagar in 1985, she sang for Bollywood films as well as classical and devotional music, later collaborating with her husband Himesh Reshammiya on albums.
