Kawe Kafé formed in Lima in 2013 with three members: Maricarmen Marín on vocals, Renzo Bravo on guitar, and Gian Marco Mendoza on bass and percussion. Their music pulls from Andean rhythms alongside Afro-Peruvian, rock, and pop elements, avoiding easy categorization.
Their song "Agridoce" became a notable track for the band. In 2019 they released a studio album of the same name, following a 2014 debut album and a 2016 live recording called Sonidos del Perú. They put out an EP titled Luna Negra in 2022.
At one point, "Agridoce" faced plagiarism accusations that the band denied. The group had some early difficulty finding listeners beyond their local scene before gaining wider attention in Peru and internationally.
