En menig kind der armen
Zou graag zo'n hondje zijn
Als Fifi 't vlees niet mals genoeg vindt
Haalt hij de neus op en bromt kwaad
Dan komt de dienstmeid die het eten
Achter een boom werpt op de straat
En is de dienstmeid weer naar binnen
Komt 'n kindje, haveloos gekleed
Dat smult ervan en Fifi ziet het
En gromt voor 't raam foei, wat 'n proleet
Als Fifi dood is, liggen bloemen
En mooie rozen op zijn mand
Hij krijgt een eigen graf met 'n grafsteen
Daar heeft hij recht op door zijn stand
Als 't kind der armen wordt begraven
Daalt 't ruwe kistj' in 't grote graf
En snikkend zegt de moeder: 'Liev'ling
Een bloempje? Heus, 't kon er niet van af!'
