Hal Ketchum came out of Grand Saline, Texas, and spent years playing honky-tonks before signing with Curb Records in 1988. His debut album 'Past the Point of Rescue' included 'Small Town Saturday Night,' which became one of his best-known songs. He worked with musicians like guitarist Michael Dearing and bassist Dave Pomeroy.
His music often dealt with loss and relationships, sometimes with a straightforward country feel, sometimes leaning toward folk. Songs like 'I Miss My Mary' and 'Hearts Are Gonna Roll' showed his way with a plainspoken lyric and a voice that could carry the weight of the subject.
He released albums through the 1990s and into the 2000s, including 'Sure Fire' in 1991 and 'Every Little Word' in 1994. The 2007 album 'The Cowboy Rides Away' was among his later work.
