Kiha & the Faces formed in 2013 when singer-songwriter Kiha Kim met guitarist Jean-Paul Bourelly, bassist Sam Yahel, and drummer Charly Persip. Their 2014 single 'Ga Na Da' became their breakout track, built around Afro-fusion rhythms and Kiha's vocals. The band has released three albums: 'Ga Na Da' in 2014, 'Love and Liberation' in 2017, and a self-titled record in 2023.
Their music incorporates elements of jazz, funk, and world music, with lyrics that often touch on themes of unity and social awareness. Songs like 'Cheap Coffee' and 'Human Mind' show their range within this style. They've performed at festivals including Glastonbury and Montreux Jazz Festival.
In 2015, the band faced some criticism about cultural appropriation for using African musical styles. Kiha addressed this by acknowledging their influences while emphasizing their own blend of traditions. The group has also worked with musicians like saxophonist Joe Lovano and South African singer Thandiswa Mazwai.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
