Kilaman & Roots Controllers formed in the late 1970s in Trenchtown, Kingston. The band was led by vocalist and songwriter Kilaman, with a lineup that included Michael Stewart on guitar, Dwight Pinkney on bass, Delroy Morgan on drums, and David Scott on keyboards. Their music drew from reggae, roots, and dub.
Their 1985 album 'A World of Shit' gave them their most recognized song, which shares the album's title. Other tracks like 'Breed On Kills' and 'Global Murder Cleansing' continued their focus on social and political themes. They released several albums throughout the 1980s, including 'One World' in 1979 and 'The Struggle' in 1981.
The band's lyrics often addressed systemic issues, which sometimes brought them criticism. They kept recording through the decade, putting out 'Roots and Culture' in 1987 before their activity slowed.
