Kilgore Smudge

Kilgore Smudge came out of the American underground in the late 90s with a sound that mixed Eastern spirituality and blue-collar grit. Their debut album Blue Collar Zen arrived in 1999, establishing the band's particular aesthetic. Ernest "Smudge" Smith handled vocals and songwriting, with Jackie Hale on guitar, Sam Marlow on bass, and Billy Rogers on drums.

They followed with The Great Divide in 2002, which took on more political themes, and Zenith in 2005, which leaned into experimental electronics and ambient textures. By 2008's Roots, they'd circled back to a more straightforward rock sound. Songs like Cleaner and Die Cast Mold show their knack for pairing heavy grooves with Smith's searching lyrics.

Their music often drew criticism from commercial interests, partly because of lyrics that took aim at corporate greed and social inequality. They kept working anyway, releasing Awakening in 2012, an album that reflected Smith's spiritual interests.
