Archive material and source history

The Kilima Hawaiians were a Dutch band formed in the early 1960s by brothers Rob and Ferdi Bolland. Their lineup included Rob on guitar and vocals, Ferdi on bass and vocals, Dick van der Horst on drums, and Hans Versteeg on piano. Later members included Hans "Kwakkie" van Eijk on guitar and vocals, and Martin van der Starre on bass and vocals.

They're best known for their 1967 song "Er Hangt Een Paardenhoofdstel Aan De Muur," which became something of an enduring hit in the Netherlands. Other songs like "Nacht Over Java" and "Indisch Visserslied (hier Laat Ik Mijn Hengel Zakken)" show their range across country, folk, and rockabilly styles.

The band faced some difficult moments, including the death of drummer Dick van der Horst in a boating accident in 1971. They replaced him with Jan "Jopie" Wensink, but eventually disbanded temporarily in 1980. They reunited in the 1990s and continued performing.
