King Bongó formed in Madrid in 1967, with founding members José Alberto "Kid" Ayala on vocals and bongos, José Manuel "El Matador" Camacho on guitar, and Manolo González on bass. Their music drew from Afro-Cuban rhythms and Latin jazz, and they released albums like "King Bongó" in 1970 and "Vamos a Bailar" in 1972.
Their song "Cogele El Golpe" became known for its socially conscious lyrics during a period when such expressions faced challenges in Spain. The band continued recording into the 1980s with albums including "Viento Solar" in 1980 and "Raza" in 1983.
Over time, other musicians joined the group, including vocalist María Jiménez and guitarist Manuel "Manolo" Sanlúcar. They maintained a presence in Spanish music for several decades while keeping their rhythmic foundation.
