Kinito Méndez was born Juan Manuel Méndez in 1957. He started as a drummer in local Santo Domingo bands before his vocal talent took center stage. His debut album 'Te Gusta El Merengue?' came out in 1985.
In 1989 he released 'El Tamarindo,' which became his signature track. The song's danceable rhythm and memorable chorus made it a merengue staple. Other popular songs from his catalog include 'Cachamba' and 'El Baile Del Sua Sua.'
He recorded more than thirty albums, with titles like 'El Zorzal' and 'El Original.' His band at different points included pianist Juan Valdez and bassist Porfirio 'Popi' Piña. Méndez worked with artists including Juan Luis Guerra and Olga Tañón.
In 2004 he faced an arrest on drug charges that were later dismissed. He kept performing and recording after that episode.
