Archive material and source history

Kinky Machine formed in Sheffield in 1983, with Paul Barker on vocals, Dominic Appleton on guitar and keyboards, and Marc Hey on drums. They took their name from Fritz Lang's 1927 film 'Metropolis,' which hints at their interest in technology and darker themes. Their music mixed electro, industrial, and synth-pop into something that felt both unsettling and oddly melodic.

Songs like 'Monday's Child' and 'Chemical Lullaby' show how they could wrap difficult subjects in atmospheric electronics. Their lyrics often dealt with alienation and loss, which sometimes put them at odds with critics who found their approach too confrontational. They kept at it for nearly two decades, putting out albums like 'Symphony of Terror' in 1987 and 'The Devil's Music' in 1994.

Kinky Machine broke up in 1999, with Barker moving into production and the others pursuing solo work. You can still hear traces of their sound in later artists who liked to keep things dark and textured.
