Kitchens of Destinction

Kitchens of Distinction formed in 1986 around Patrick Fitzgerald, who handled vocals and guitar. Their sound drew from post-punk and ambient music, with Geoffrey Cox on keyboards and Dan Goodwin on bass helping shape what became their particular approach. They released their first album, Love Is Hell, in 1990, which included the track 4 Men.

That album and others like Strange Free World and The Death of Cool featured what some called ethereal textures and Fitzgerald's introspective lyrics. Songs such as Drive That Fast and Blue Pedal appeared across their five studio albums, which concluded with Radiology in 1999. The lineup saw changes over time, with Julian Swales on drums and William Houstoun on guitar at various points.

Their music never found wide commercial footing, but it maintained a following among listeners drawn to its atmospheric quality. Fitzgerald's tendency to avoid interviews and the band's overall low profile meant they operated mostly outside mainstream attention, releasing music through the 1990s before activity slowed.
