der zweite, ich Fagott,
der dritte, ich trompete,

und sie saßen bis zum Abend,

Nur der Alte in der Ecke
war recht still und sprach nicht oft,
wälzte sich aus seiner Decke,
rückte ran und sagte schroff,
ich spiel so gut wie nie,

und er brachte still und stumm
die ganze Sippschaft um.
Bei dem Krach da flogen Teller,
und ein Tisch, der stürzte um,
und ein Weib kam aus dem Keller,
betrat den Raum und sah sich um,

ging mit ihr durchs ganze Land,
und sie brachten große Not
mit dem Lied vom Tod.
Und als der Krieg vorbei war,
da waren sie alt und grau,
und weil kein Weib mehr da war,
da nahm er sie zur Frau.
Und sie würgte ihm drei Söhne,
die waren dick und dünn,
doch die hatten andere Töne,
nicht das Lied im Sinn.
Und der erste von den Söhnen
wollte Flöte spielen wie nie,
doch der zweite stand auf Tönen
aus 'ner Liebesmelodie.
Und sie saßen bis zum Abend,
und sie fragten wie und wer,
und der Abend war sehr labend,
doch man hörte die Musik nicht mehr.
