Background notes

Archive material and source history

Knights formed in London's early 1980s underground scene, with guitarist and vocalist Mark Kelley and bassist Tom Carter at the core. They were joined by drummer Ian Thurley, and the band spent those first years playing pubs and clubs while building a following. Their sound was raw and direct, and they faced some early resistance from record labels who weren't sure what to do with them.

Their debut album 'The Age of Darkness' came out in 1985 and found an audience. The song 'Omega' from that record became a staple, its anthemic chorus connecting with fans. The album's success placed them within the broader New Wave of British Heavy Metal conversation happening at the time.

They released several more albums, including 'Metalmorphosis', 'Knights of the Abyss', and 'The Shadow of Death'. The band's lineup shifted over time, with Thurley eventually replaced by drummer Rob Harris and Carter by bassist Paul Atkins. Their lyrics and stage presence sometimes drew criticism, but they maintained a steady course through the late '80s and into the '90s.
