Knights of the Abyss formed in the late 1990s as a quartet with vocalist Damien Grim, guitarists Ethan Blackfire and Alex Shadow, and drummer Matt Nightfall. Their debut album 'Hadlock' came out in 1999, featuring the title track that became something of an anthem for certain metal listeners.
Their music drew accusations of Satanism and occultism, which the band didn't shy away from. They kept working with darker themes in their lyrics and imagery, which divided listeners between those who appreciated their approach and those who found it troubling.
Songs like 'Dead To Reform' and 'I Pledge Agrievance' show their style - heavy, atmospheric, and unapologetically dark. They released several albums after 'Hadlock', including one called 'A New Darkened Faith'.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
