Kólica formed in Salvador, Bahia in 1996 with Alice Portugal on vocals and guitar, Fábio Sá on bass, and Betinho on drums. Their sound pulled from punk and hardcore but kept some Brazilian rhythmic textures underneath.
Their debut album 'Mulher Alienada' came out in 1998, and the title track became their most recognized song. The lyrics dealt with social and political themes, often with a dark, satirical edge that drew both fans and critics.
They released three more albums after that: 'Dentes Podres' in 2000, 'Máquina de Fazer Chorar' in 2003, and 'O Último Trem' in 2006. Their concerts sometimes sparked protests, but they kept playing until around 2006.
