Kollision formed in Berlin in 1982 around singer-songwriter Wolfgang Wendland and guitarist Frank Zander. Their music pulled from punk, rock, and reggae, but the focus was always on the words. They put out their self-titled debut album in 1984.
A year later, the song 'Hiroshima' appeared. It became their best-known track, a direct anti-war statement about the atomic bombing that got translated into other languages and covered by other artists. Another song, 'We Are The Last of Us,' carried a similar weight. Their lyrics generally dealt with war, poverty, and discrimination.
They kept recording through the late 80s and into the 90s, with albums like 'Mauer im Kopf' in 1987 and 'Auf der Suche nach dem Glück' in 1994. The band's lineup included other musicians over time, like bassist Manfred Praeker and drummer Michael Timm.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
