Kolmas Nainen formed in 1985 with Sanna Kurki-Suonio on vocals, Riitta Pajunen on guitar, and Leena Peisa on bass. Their first album came out in 1987, simply titled 'Kolmas Nainen.' It included 'Äiti Pojastaan Pappia Toivoi,' a song about a mother hoping for a father figure for her son that became well-known in Finland.
That track and others like 'Asserin kapakkaan' and 'Avaruusmies' showed their style, which mixed folk and rock with acoustic guitars and close harmonies. They drew from Finnish and international folk music, along with poetry and literature.
The band's lyrics sometimes touched on social themes, which brought some criticism early on. But Kurki-Suonio, Pajunen, and Peisa stayed together as the core members through their recordings.
