Kortatu formed in 1984 as a Basque rock band with Iñigo Muguruza on vocals and guitar, his brother Fermin on bass, and Treku Armendariz on drums. Their first album came out in 1985, followed by others like 'El Estado de las Cosas' in 1986 and 'Kolpez Kolpe' in 1988. They played a mix of punk, rock, and Basque folk music, with songs like 'Zu Atrapatu Arte' and 'El Último Ska de Manolo Rastamán' showing their range.
Their lyrics often dealt with political and social themes, which sometimes brought them trouble with censorship. Iñigo Muguruza later started another band called Negu Gorriak, while Fermin went on to work as a solo artist.
