Koryn Hawthorne first caught attention in 2015 when she won the BET Sunday Best singing competition. She's from Hammond, Louisiana, and grew up singing in church. Her debut album 'Unstoppable' came out in 2016 and went to number one on the Billboard Gospel Albums chart.
She followed that with 'I Am' in 2018 and 'Speak My Mind' in 2019. Songs like 'Won't He Do It' and 'Bless Up' show her gospel roots, but she's also worked with artists outside that world, including Tori Kelly and Snoop Dogg. Her producer Warryn Campbell has been part of her sound from early on.
In 2018, a video surfaced of Hawthorne using profanity, which led to some discussion about what fits in Christian music. She apologized at the time. These days her music sometimes blends gospel with pop and R&B touches, but she still performs with gospel figures like Kirk Franklin and CeCe Winans.
Keep it compact: a lyric you come back to, a live memory, or the part of the catalog you would point someone toward first.
