Kosheen

Kosheen came out of Bristol in the late 1990s as a trio with Shane Ridgeway on vocals and guitar, Darren Beale on production, and Markee Substance also singing. Their early sound pulled from the city's trip-hop and drum and bass scenes, but they worked it into something more atmospheric and song-oriented. The track 'Hide U' from 1999 became their breakout, a moody piece built around a persistent bassline and Ridgeway's distant, pleading vocal.

Their 2002 album 'Resist' was where that approach fully came together. It included 'Hide U' along with other singles like 'Catch' and '(Slip & Slide) Suicide,' songs that balanced electronic production with a kind of pop structure. The album found an audience, though the band's relationship with the broader music industry wasn't always smooth. They tended to operate on their own terms, which sometimes meant being misunderstood or facing resistance from critics expecting something more straightforward.

After 'Resist,' they kept making music, releasing several more albums. Their sound evolved, but they never really settled into a single, easy category. They were a band that made electronic music you could get lost in, built more on feeling and atmosphere than on genre rules.
