Kula Shaker

Kula Shaker formed in 1995 with Crispian Mills on vocals and guitar, Alonza Bevan on drums, Stuart Dunlop on guitar, and Jay Darlington on bass. Their debut single "Tattva" got attention quickly, and their first album "K" came out in 1996. They had a sound that mixed psychedelic rock with Eastern spiritual themes, which felt different from a lot of other British alternative bands at the time.

One of their best-known tracks is "Govinda," which uses Hindu imagery and sparked some debate. Songs like "Hush" and "Shower Your Love" showed their knack for melodic rock with a slightly trippy edge. They followed up with albums like "Peasants, Pigs & Astronauts" in 1999 and "Strangefolk" in 2007, though lineup changes happened along the way, with Dunlop and Darlington eventually leaving.

Their music didn't fit neatly into one category, pulling from 60s psychedelia and Eastern instrumentation without sounding like a revival act. They built a dedicated following, even if they never became mainstream giants. The band's work has held up as a specific, slightly odd moment in 90s British rock.
