Kumbia Band formed in Brownsville, Texas in the early 1990s, led by A.B. Quintanilla III, who is Selena's brother. Their debut album 'Amor Prohibido' came out in 1996, with the title track becoming a major hit. The band's sound mixed cumbia with hip-hop and Latin pop.
In 1999, a legal dispute led to a split, with Quintanilla forming a new version of Kumbia Band while former members continued as A.B. Quintanilla y Los Kumbia All Starz. The original lineup included Quintanilla on bass and vocals, Cruz Martínez on keyboards, Pee Wee on accordion, Roy Ramírez on drums, and Ricky Rick on güiro.
They released about ten studio albums, including 'Dejame Volar' in 2002 and 'Fuego' in 2003. Songs like 'PROHIBIDO' and 'Te Amaré' show their blend of cumbia rhythms with pop melodies. The band's lineup changed over time, but Quintanilla remained the central figure.
