The Kumbianberos started as buskers on the streets of Medellín, with Álvaro Ricardo and William Mora playing cumbia for passersby. They kept at it through some financial struggles and skepticism about whether they could update the traditional sound without losing its core. Their 2016 song "Te Amo" eventually connected with listeners well beyond Colombia, becoming something of an anthem for them.
In 2012, they were accused of plagiarism for using a melody from a traditional vallenato song in their track "Me Gustas." The band argued it was a common folk tune, and they kept working. Their albums include Cumbia y Sentimiento from 2007, Pa' que te enamores in 2011, and Made in Colombia in 2019.
Alongside Ricardo on vocals and Mora on guacharaca, the group includes Andrés Cuervo on drums, Juan Pablo "El Indio" Zuleta on bass, and Johan Arbeláez on guitar. They've played festivals and had their music placed in films and TV shows, working with artists like Fonseca and Carlos Vives along the way.
