Marlene Kuntz

Marlene Kuntz started in 1989 in Cuneo, Italy, with Cristiano Godano on vocals, Riccardo Tesio on guitar, and Luca Bergia on drums. They named themselves after a character from the film 'Marlene.' Early on, they built a local following with a sound that mixed post-punk and grunge, leaning into introspective lyrics that sometimes drew criticism from more conservative listeners.

Their 1994 album 'Catartica' helped define their place in Italy's alternative scene. Songs like 'Canto' and 'Sacrosanta Verit' from their catalog show their knack for blending raw energy with melodic hooks. They kept experimenting, as on the 2003 album 'Senza peso,' but also circled back to a rawer approach with 'Il vile' in 2007.

Over time, the lineup shifted around the core trio, with bassists like Gianluca Viano and Francesco Bianconi coming and going. They never settled into one style, which made their music hard to pin down but kept it interesting for fans who followed them from the start.
