Editor's note

L-Cord, a Lisbon band with a quiet pull

A Portuguese group whose songs, from 'A Minha Vida' onward, turn inward without settling into one sound.

For a sense of their range, try 'A Minha Vida' for that early, resonant touch and 'Eu' for something more stripped-back. Both feel lived-in.

Their second album 'A Minha Vida' in 2006 gave them a title track that connected, along with songs like 'Onde quer que esteja' and 'Caminhos Perdidos'. They've kept at it through lineup shifts and public disagreements, putting out albums like 'Solstício' and 'Jardim Secreto' that lean into introspective territory. It's the kind of steady, unflashy work that builds a catalog worth returning to.

They formed in Lisbon around 2003 and released the debut 'Nosso Mundo' in 2005. After bassist João Barbosa left in 2009 and a break, they came back with 'Solstício' in 2011, weathered a public disagreement, and kept going with albums like 'O Caos da Imaginação' in 2016.

L-Cord formed in Lisbon around 2003, with Pedro Afonso on vocals, Gonçalo Pereira on guitar, João Barbosa on bass, and Miguel Paraíso on drums. They put out a debut album called 'Nosso Mundo' in 2005. A year later, their second album 'A Minha Vida' gave them a song by the same name that connected with people, along with other tracks like 'Onde quer que esteja' and 'Caminhos Perdidos'.

There were some changes after that. João Barbosa left the band in 2009, and they took a break for a while. When they came back in 2011 with the album 'Solstício', some of the lyrics drew criticism, which the band addressed. A few years later, there was a public disagreement between Afonso and Pereira, but they worked it out and kept making music.

They've released a few more albums since then, including 'O Caos da Imaginação' in 2016 and 'Jardim Secreto' in 2020. Bruno Silva joined on bass after Barbosa's departure. Their songs, from 'Eu' to 'Quando amanhecer', tend to lean into introspective territory without sticking to one sound.
