La Bamboche formed in Paris in 1979, a group of musicians who played street music with a festive, danceable energy. Their lineup included Jean-Louis Ladoire on vocals and guitar, Jean-Jacques Vaillant on trumpet, Jean-Pierre Bacot on clarinet and saxophone, Jean-Paul Le Garrec on accordion, Patrice Méréaux on bass, and Jean-Marie Radigois on drums.
In 1981 they released the song "Bonne Année," which became a New Year's anthem in France. That same year they put out an album of the same name. They followed it with "La Bamboche au Pays de Noël" in 1982 and a live recording from the Olympia theater in 1983.
Their sound mixed Parisian street music with French folk and some jazz touches, built around accordion, brass, and upbeat rhythms. Another track, "Quitte Paris," shows their style of celebrating city life with wit and energy. They kept performing through the 1980s, marking their tenth anniversary with a special album in 1989.
