La Banda Al Rojo Vivo formed in 1998, bringing together musicians like vocalist Jerry Rivera, trumpeter Quique Necochea, and his brother Raulito on trombone. Their debut album "Abrazame" gave them an early hit with its title track, a song that became familiar on dance floors. Guitarist Jorge Laboy, bassist Purris Ortiz, and percussionist Wilfredo Morales rounded out that initial group.
They worked mainly in salsa and merengue, releasing albums like "Yo Quiero Saber" in 2000 and "Vida" in 2002. Songs such as "Amame" and "Con Todos Menos Conmigo" kept their sound in rotation. The band saw lineup changes over time, including Rivera's departure, but continued with vocalists like Luisito Rosario and Nelson Torres joining later.
By 2008 they had put out "La Historia," and the core instrumental section of the Necochea brothers, Laboy, Ortiz, and Morales remained a constant. Their music drew from Puerto Rican traditions, though they faced a plagiarism claim in 2011 regarding the song "I Like It Like That." They defended the work as inspired by folk styles.
