La Charanga Habanera

La Charanga Habanera formed in Havana in 1988, led by flutist David Calzado. Their early sound mixed Cuban salsa with jazz and funk elements, which didn't immediately fit with the established music circles there. They built a following playing around Havana before things shifted in 1993 with the album 'Habana a Todo Ritmo' and its single 'Habanera!', which became a dance floor staple far beyond Cuba.

That track, along with songs like 'Gozando En La Habana (Cuentame)' and 'Muévete', defined their approach: propulsive rhythms, bright horn arrangements, and vocals that worked for both listening and dancing. The band kept recording through the 1990s with albums like 'Pa'lante con La Charanga' in 1994 and 'Soy Cubano' in 1999, maintaining a steady output of material built for movement.

Over time, the group's lineup included musicians like keyboardist Juanjo Hernández, bassist Yunisel Cabrera, and vocalist Osmany Colinas. Their recordings and live shows emphasized energy and direct communication with audiences, which helped their music travel even when some listeners debated how it represented Cuban traditions.
