La Charo formed in Valencia in 1992, with Charo Dominguez on vocals, Alejandro Correa on guitar, and Juanlu Albiach on bass. Their debut album "A Pie de Playa" found an audience in Spain, and their 1996 single "Sobre Tu Playa" became a popular track that reached listeners beyond their home country.
Some traditionalists criticized their approach for blending flamenco techniques with pop elements, but the group kept working in that style. They toured in Europe and Latin America, and at one point collaborated with guitarist Paco de Lucía.
In 1996, they faced accusations of plagiarism over a melody that resembled a folk song, which they denied. They released several albums through the late 1990s, including "Agua Dulce," "Aire," and "El Sonido del Agua."
