La Ciudad Maldita formed in Barcelona in the mid-1990s with Javi Robles on vocals, Alex Cappa on guitar, Ricky Márquez on bass, and David Martínez on drums. They took their name from what they saw as the social problems in their hometown.
Their 1996 debut album "Cólera" gave them a following in Spanish heavy metal circles. The title track "Cólera" became something of an underground anthem with its aggressive sound and confrontational lyrics.
The band faced some resistance early on, with occasional show cancellations and criticism of their performances. But they kept playing to audiences who connected with their music.
