La Clave Norteña formed in 1984 in Monterrey, Nuevo León, with brothers Liber and Alberto Garza and their cousin David Lomelí. They started playing at local gatherings, drawing from the traditional norteño sound around them. The band's lineup has stayed consistent with Liber on vocals and accordion, Alberto on vocals and bass, and David on vocals and drums.
Their 2005 single "Amiga Mía" drew some criticism for its subject matter, but it became one of their most popular songs. Other tracks like "Así Fue" and "Enganchados" also found an audience. They've released albums including El Aventurero in 1990, Homenaje a Los Cadetes de Linares in 1997, and Leyendas del Norte in 2008.
Some early listeners thought their approach strayed too far from traditional norteño, but they kept playing their way. Their music has been heard beyond northern Mexico, though they've mostly stayed with the same three members since the beginning.
