La Concentración formed in Santo Domingo in 1990, led by brothers Lenin and Jandy Ventura, who are sons of merengue bandleader Johnny Ventura. They started putting out albums like 'Pa' lo oscuro' in 1991 and 'La cura' in 1993, working with traditional merengue rhythms but giving them a sharper edge.
Their 1996 song 'El Tapón de Gasolina' became their most recognizable track and also got them into trouble. The lyrics criticized political corruption and social inequality, which led the Dominican government to ban it from radio airplay. The band kept performing it live anyway, and it turned into something of a protest anthem.
They released a few more albums after that, including 'La nueva era' in 1998 and 'El despertar' in 2000. Their music toured through the Dominican Republic and internationally, though the details of those tours aren't well documented in most sources.
