La Excepción

La Excepción came out of Granada in the late 1990s, a Spanish hip-hop group built around MCs El Langui and El Gitano Antón. Their sound pulled from flamenco rhythms and vocals, mixing that tradition with straightforward rap beats. They put out their first album, 'Blockstalgia,' in 2001.

Their lyrics often dealt with poverty and inequality, which drew some criticism. The group kept at it, releasing albums like 'Aguantando el tirón' in 2002 and 'La verdad más verdadera' in 2005. Songs such as 'Se Muera La Madre' and 'Chungo Petaca' carried a blunt, confrontational tone that connected with listeners who recognized the frustrations in the words.

They weren't trying to smooth things over. The music stayed grounded in the specifics of their background, using the language and cadence of the streets they came from rather than reaching for a broader, polished sound. It was rap that felt local, even when it tackled themes that weren't.
